Application Note No. NTHC-002
Thermistor Basics
NTC thermistors are resistors with a high negative
temperature coefficient. They are produced from
high purity combinations of metallic oxides. Small
sizes, tight resistance tolerances, and fast response
to temperature variations make thermistors ideal
for precise temperature sensing and compensation.
The resistance of a thermistor as a function of
temperature is approximated by:
R(T) = Ro•e^[B(1/T-1/To)]
Where . . .
B is a material constant (B value)
T is the temperature in degrees Kelvin (
o
K)
Ro is the resistance of the thermistor at To
Usually To is taken at room temperature
(25
o
C = 298
o
K), and values of Ro range from less
than 50 ohms to several megohms.
The B Value is not a fixed constant and will vary as
a function of the material composition. Over wide
temperature ranges the resistance can best be
expressed using the Steinhart and Hart equation
and several resistance-temperature points from the
Resistance vs. Temperature Tables
(see
following 11 pages attached).
Dissipation Constant (D.C.)
The dissipation constant is the amount of power
needed to raise the temperature of the thermistor (due
to self-heating) by 1
o
C when mounted on standard
glass-epoxy boards (1.2mm thick). This intrinsic
heating process can be expressed by the following
equation:

P is the consumed power (I•R = I•V)
T1 is the thermistor temperature
T2 is the ambient temperature
Power Rating
The power rating is the maximum continuous power
the thermistor can withstand based on maximum
permissible temperature rise. Self-heating will limit
the power rating to the following equation.

Thermal Time Constant
The time it takes for the temperature of the thermistor
to change 63.2% of the difference between its initial
and final temperatures. The thermal time constant is
dependent upon the heat dissipation characteristics of
its mounting environment. For chip thermistors used
under typical conditions, the time constant will be 2
to 10 seconds.
Resistance Temperature Coefficient
The resistance temperature coefficient (T.C.) of a
thermistor is the rate of change of the resistance per

C temperature change. It is expressed in percent
change per

C and is given by:

Typical values of T.C. range from -2% ~ -5%/ C.
This large change is what makes thermistors so
useful as sensitive temperature sensors.
