Multilayer ceramic “Porcelain” - General information
MULTILAYER CERAMIC “PORCELAIN” CAPACITORS
GENERAL INFORMATION
TEMEX has been designing and manufacturing ceramic / porcelain capacitors in Pessac (outskirts of
Bordeaux - FRANCE) for the last 30 years with a constant growth.
This factory is under ISO 9001-2000 and ISO 14001 certification.
R & D Team
The ceramic manufacturing process is a physical and chemical process. It requires high trained and
graduated engineers in Physics/Chemistry and also specialists in ceramic material and glass/ceramic-
metal interfacing (among other matters).
Our Engineers have Doctor degrees - and sometimes more - or are stemming from famous and well-
known Schools (ENSCI: Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Céramique Industrielle ; ENSCPB: Ecole
Nationale Supérieure de Chimie et de Physique de Bordeaux) and/or Universities.
The modification/obsolescence of raw materials with the time and environmental conditions and their
use with solvents and binders is the most important challenge that this team is daily fronted with:
to keep a production stabilized with raw material changes is really the most difficult challenge that our
engineers have to overcome.
Those engineers are assisted with electronic engineers for the under development products charac-
terization and modelization.
Engineering team
Our team is made of true specialists and engineers in Mechanics for interfacing ceramic process and
mechanical connections: they work closely with ceramic engineers for improved quality and reliabili-
ty. They are also in charge of studying all requests dealing with custom – designed products fitted to
special applications and to develop production equipment.
TEMEX reserves the right to modify herein specifications and information at any time when necessary to provide optimum performance and cost.
Nature of the know-how
Fundamentally based on expertise and experience in:
• Mastering the testing and analyzing of raw materials (dielectric powder / metal for electrode)
in order to accept or to refuse them.
• Mastering the dielectric formulation production (for homemade formulation).
• Mastering the electrode ink formulation (metal / binder / solvent).
• Mastering electrode/chip design for optimization of electrical parameters and physical
construction (nature and number of electrodes/layers vs. expected voltage, current
and capacitance value).
• Sintering together at high and/or low temperature metal and ceramic dielectric.
• Metallization (collection of internal electrodes at both side of the chip = nature and number
of metallizations vs. specified parameters).
• Connecting wires, ribbons, D.I.L pins to chip (metal/ceramic interface).
• Mastering resistance to thermal shocks during connection of wires to chips.

Multilayer ceramic “Porcelain” - General information
Ceramic capacitors are used everywhere in electronic circuits.
Most of the functions of the electronics may be satisfied with a ceramic/porcelain multilayer capacitor.
The performance that is always expected is:
• No loss (High Q) up to the highest possible frequency,
High series resonance frequency (Low ESL),
No resonance at the working frequency and high insulation.
This will be achieved by combination of dielectric material, internal electrode structure and metal-liza-
tions allowing low losses in low frequencies in the dielectric and in the electrodes at higher frequen-
cies (low ESR).
It will be every time a compromise between price and performances depending on the application
(frequency range and expected performances).
Functions
• Liaison
• DC blocking
• Time constant
• Temperature compensation
• Impedance matching
• Filtering
• Transient Noise suppressor
• Tuning
• Decoupling (AC by- passing)
• Filter networks
• Energy storage
Note:
it is generally said and admitted that “porcelain” capacitors would be better than those called
simply “ceramic” allowing a higher price. This is not exactly the way we are seeing the matter:
- Good RF capacitors have been manufactured and are still manufactured with excellent dielectric
material (magnesium silicate and titanate) under the word “porcelain” and sold at high price.
Their performances are excellent in high frequencies due to their internal electrode structure and
to their excellent low ESR.
- Some capacitors purely referenced as “ceramic", but having the same process that the so-called
porcelain and benefiting from the same electrode special care may also have the same excellent char-
acteristics.
- Today the artificial boarder is no more between the “ceramic” and the “porcelain” but between
a capacitor having a good or bad ESR /ESL, for a considered range of frequency, a compatible case
size with pick and place requirements (when needed) and at a reasonable price.
TEMEX is offering several solutions in several dielectric constants, case size and voltages in order
to cover most of the RF applications of the XXI
st
century, for civil and military applications linked to
radio communication, transmissions etc.
Typical applications: RF amplifiers, LNA’s, oscillators, mixers and coils (medical IRM) very well known
in the industry.

Packaging & Taping
All multilayer ceramic and/or porcelain chip capacitors can be delivered on tape as per IEC286-3 and
EIA481 standards.Tape options include 7" (180 mm) and 13" (330 mm) reels.
Standard ceramic capacitors are generally delivered in high quality dust free punch 8 mm paper
(delamination and moisture absorption resistant) or in embossed plastic tape in 8, 12 or 24 mm width.
When conductive material is necessary, then carbon filled materials are used. Please consult your local
sales office.
Standard quantity per reel are indicated in the tables hereafter.
Please consult your local sales office in case you would need a smaller quantity. Special conditions may
apply.
