Description
The
PLD08
series converters are surface mount non-isolated dual output DC/DC converters. The products
provide point of load conversion of a single 3.3V or 5V input voltage into two independently regulated low
output voltages. Each output can provide up to 5A of output current, has an independent feedback loop and
independent trim function. Two power trains operate out of phase thus significantly reducing input ripple
current and simplifying external filtering. High efficiency, low space requirements, and flexible loading
characteristics make the converters an ideal choice for powering multi-voltage ASICs.

3.3V Input, Dual 1.2 to 2.5V Output
Typical Application
Figure 7 shows the recommended connections for
the PLD08 series converter.
Fig.7 Typical application of PLD08 series
The PLD series converters do require external
input and output capacitors for proper operation.
A minimum of a 100ìF capacitor with an ESR
<0.1Ω is to be connected to the input and to each
of the outputs of the PLD08 series. Note that each
output also requires a minimum current of 0.2A for
proper functioning.
If the magnitude of the inrush current needs to be
limited, see the “Inrush Current Control
Application Note” on www.power-one.com.
For output decoupling, it is recommended using
small ceramic capacitors connected directly
across the output pins of the converter. Note that
the capacitors do not substitute the filtering
required by the load.
optical coupler directly at the module will solve
any of these problems.
Output Voltage Trim
The trim feature allows the user to adjust each of
the output voltages by +/-10% from the nominal
(except the 3.3V input with 2.5V output model).
This can be used to compensate distribution
drops, perform margining in production, or
accommodate other requirements when output
voltage needs to be adjusted from the nominal.
The Trim Function
The trim mechanism for the PLD08 series is a
negative one. Each of the outputs trims up with a
resistor from the TRIM pin to the GND pin and
trims down with a resistor from the TRIM pin to
the respective +Vout pin.

Shutdown Feature Description
The ON/OFF pin in the PLD08 series converters,
functions as a normal soft shutdown.
It is
referenced to the GND pin (see Figure 7). When
the ON/OFF pin is pulled low to within 0.4 V of
ground, the outputs are turned off and the unit
goes into a very low input power mode.
(Isn’t this the on/off pin above?)When the pin is
left floating or pulled high to Vin, the unit is ON
and operates normally.
An open collector switch is recommended to
control the voltage between the ON/OFF pin and
the GND pin of the converter. The ON/OFF pin is
pulled up internally, so no external voltage source
is required.
The user should avoid connecting
a resistor between the ON/OFF pin and the
+Vin pin.
When the ON/OFF pin is used to achieve remote
control, the user must take care to insure that the
pin reference for the control is really the GND pin.
The control signal must not be referenced ahead
of EMI filtering, or remotely from the unit.

The PLD08 series converters do
not provide
isolation
from input to output.
Relevant isolation requirements according to all
IEC60950 based standards must be provided by
the input devices to the PLD08 series module.
Nevertheless, if the system using the converter
needs to receive safety agency approval, certain
rules must be followed in the design of the
system. In particular, all of the creepage and
clearance requirements of the end-use safety
requirements must be observed.
These
documents include UL60950 - CSA60950-00 and
EN60950, although specific applications may
have other or additional requirements.
The PLD08 series converters have no internal
fuse. An external fuse must be provided to
protect the system from catastrophic failure. A
fuse with a rating not greater than 7A, 125V is
recommended. The user can select a lower rating
fuse based upon the inrush transient and the
maximum input current of the converter, which
occurs at the minimum input voltage. Both input
traces and the chassis ground trace (if applicable)
must be capable of conducting a current of 1.5
times the value of the fuse without opening. The
fuse must not be placed in the grounded input
line, if any.
In order for the output of the PLD08 series
converter to be considered as SELV (Safety Extra
Low Voltage), according to all IEC60950 based
standards, the input to the module needs to be
supplied by an isolated secondary source
providing a SELV also.

When the output voltage is trimmed up,
the output power from the converter must not
exceed its maximum rating. This is determined by
measuring the output voltage on the output pins,
and multiplying it by the output current.
In order to avoid creating apparent load
regulation degradation, it is important that the trim
resistors are connected directly to the Vout and
output GND pins, and not to the load or to traces
going to the load.
The PLD08 series converters will trim
down more than the 10% limit. In general, this is
permissible. The user must confirm that the
results are acceptable in his application.
