Introduction
Solutions for Next-Generation
Embedded Applications:
This selector guide summarizes the microcon-
trollers (MCUs) and microprocessors (MPUs)
in the popular Renesas SuperH product line
and the development tools that support them.
These 32-bit devices use upward-compatible
SuperH RISC and RISC/DSP architectures to
achieve the high processing throughput
required for many embedded systems. They
exhibit a superior figure of merit for applica-
tions in automotive, consumer electronics,
communications and industrial control
markets, among others.

APPLICATION
s
Overview
Hundreds of millions of SuperH
MCUs and MPUs today power a
vast range of embedded system
products. Customers choose these
devices because they offer combina-
tions of speed, size, peripheral inte-
gration, power dissipation and cost
tailored to the requirements of key
applications. System engineers
recognize that 32-bit SuperH RISC
and RISC/DSP architectures operate
at fast clock speeds, provide high
bus speeds, and execute instructions
in one or very few clock cycles.
They know they can shorten devel-
opment cycles by leveraging the
many development tools, turnkey
designs, middleware and other
support products and services
available.
Cost-effective SuperH chips are
built with advanced CMOS
processes and use compact, eco-
nomical packages. They achieve
good power efficiency via extensive
use of power-saving circuit designs
and power-down operating modes.
The processors provide essential on-
chip functions with requisite
features. As a result, SuperH series
devices provide outstanding per-
formance for the price (high
MIPS/$) and consume relatively low
power for the performance delivered
(high MIPS/W).
The roadmap above summarizes the
performance and key features of the
various SuperH processors.

Family Overview and Key Applications
s
SuperH MCU/MPU Series and
Key Applications:
The SuperH MCU/MPU product line
currently consists of five basic
families, SH-1 to SH-5, each
optimized for specific application
segments. Continued expansions of
these families are planned to increase
system-level performance while
retaining upward compatibility.
The common SuperH architecture
includes up to 160 instruction types,
composed of general-purpose
instructions augmented by multiply-
and-accumulate instructions for
DSP applications.
The
SH-2
chips (SH701x, SH704x
and SH714x series) have on-chip
flash and advanced motor control
timers for industrial applications.
The
SH-3
devices (SH770x series)
provide higher performance in a bus-
based context and have extensions
such as virtual-memory management
and a more powerful cache.
The
SH2-DSP
chips (SH76xx series)
and
SH3-DSP
devices (SH77xx
series) are distinguished by a full
featured on-chip DSP function that
eliminates the need for a separate
DSP chip in various applications,
while also reducing overall system
cost and power requirements. The
SH-4
series processors are fast super-
scalar devices that offer an FPU,
graphics functionality and additional
DSP features. The
SH-5
chips have a
64-bit CPU core with an ultrafast
FPU and SIMD instructions.
SuperH RISC and RISC/DSP
processors serve a wide range of
embedded systems. The table below

each device series.
