Molex’s broad range of Palladium Nickel plated CAT 3 modular jacks exceeds the
Cat 3 standard for low-speed Ethernet applications and meets the increased
durability requirement of 2500 cycles, as stipulated by IEC 60603-7 PL2, at a
lower cost than all-gold plated equivalents
CAT 3 jacks support a wide range of Ethernet applications in markets including telecom,
data, networking and home entertainment . Molex offers one of the widest breadths of
general market right-angle and vertical Cat 3 modular jacks available in low, standard or
high-profile and through-hole and SMT mounting style.
Palladium Nickel is a proven, technologically advanced plating material that provides
superior wear resistance, ductility and thermal stability. PdNi + Au-flash plated modular
jacks have successfully passed testing to meet the new durability requirements of
IEC60603-7 PL 2, achieving 2500 cycles over all-gold plated modular jacks that achieve
just 750 cycles. See STR-1340 test report for further details. Due to the lower raw
material costs of Palladium Nickel, Molex is able to offer a superior modular jack at a
more competitive price.
Shielded versions of many Cat 3 modular jacks are available for protection against
external disturbances: electro-magnetic interference (EMI) and electro-static discharge
(ESD). For additional information visit: www.molex.com/product/modjacks.html

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
• What is Palladium? It is a natural white pure precious metal that is very strong and
durable
• What is palladium used for? Palladium is used in the construction of catalytic converters
and is also found in electrical goods
• Is Palladium a stable metal? Annual palladium production has been stable over the past
20 years
• What is nickel? It is a hard metal with a silvery-white colour and can be polished to a
high shine. It is very corrosion resistant
• Why is nickel used so much? Nickel is a metal that mixes easily with other metals. Since
it is a hard metal, it is mixed with soft metals like gold to make them more durable•
• What is the reason for the added ‘flash of gold’? It can further enhance the surface wear
resistance, provide greater lubrication and can also be used for aesthetics
• Does the new PdNi version physically look the same as the Gold version? Yes, as there
will be a thin layer of gold on top of the PdNi layer
• What is the price difference between PdNi and the Gold version? This will need to be
reviewed on a case by case basis. It is expected that the price fluctuations for Palladium
Nickel will be less significant than Gold
• Is the durability/product cycling the same for PdNi as it is for Gold plating? All samples
of Modular Jacks increased durability cycling capability from 750 to 2500 cycles
• Is this product more hard wearing than existing gold plated modular jacks? Modular
Jacks have exceeded the current gold durability specification. For further details, please
see STR-1340 test report
• Are samples available? Yes
• When can orders be accepted? Molex is currently accepting orders on all PdNi versions
• What is the lead time for the PdNi + Au flash Modular Jack products? Lead time is
between 6-8 weeks
