Enabling high scalability in Voice over Packet designs.
The OCT8304 is a 1023 channel full-duplex
packetization engine for Voice over IP and Voice
over AAL2 applications. The design provides
standalone high-density G.711 packetization
while enabling integration of off-the-shelf DSPs
where flexible compression or other requirements
may be added. By combining the OCT8304 with
other Octasic voice processing devices, such as
the OCT7102 ADPCM device, or the OCT6100
Series of echo cancellation devices, complete
Voice over Packet solutions can be created.
Features
• 1000/4000+ voice packetization/aggregation
capacity
• Less than 250 µsec of latency
• Less than 2.5 watts of device power
• Simultaneous support of IPv4, IPv6, and AAL2
• Full AAL5 support including: Classical IP,
LANE (V1/V2), MPOA
• Support for MII (Ethernet), UTOPIA, and
POS-PHY network interfaces
• 2 network ports
• 4096 timeslot H.100/H.110 compliant
TDM interface
• Support for BLES
• Dynamic voice trunking
• Direct interworking with Octasic high-density
ADPCM (OCT7102) and echo cancellation
(OCT6100 Series) devices
• Silence suppression
• Read and write cache for fast accesses
• 3.3 V and 2.5V power supply
• Packaged in a 608 EPBGA
• Full evaluation kit and device API available
The OCT8304 is highly flexible to allow a single
architecture to address a diversity of require-
ments. By simultaneously supporting IPv4, IPv6,
and AAL2 at a full 155 Mbps bandwidth, a single
board design can be deployed that addresses
today’s and tomorrow’s connectivity demands.
Some of the network protocols supported
include: Ethernet p/Q, MPLS, and a complete
AAL5 implementation (supporting Classical IP,
LAN Emulation (V1/V2), and MPOA). To minimize
development efforts, all of these capabilities are
accessed through a common, connection
oriented API, providing a consistent image for
software development.
Applications
• AAL2/IP Switching
• 3G/UMTS Networks
• Voice over ATM
• Voice over DSL
• Voice over Cable
• High-density Voice Gateways
• Media Servers
Interfaces
For PCM voice input, the OCT8304 supports a
full H.100/H.110 compliant TDM interface. It can
use any of the 4096 timeslots for input or output.
The timeslots are organized in 32 streams.
The TDM interface also has programmable
frame strobes and is compatible to
legacy TDM busses such as IDL,
ST-BUS, MVIP and SCSA.
A microprocessor interface provides
control for the device and can be
used in an Intel or Motorola
mode, with 8 or 16 bits of data,
and with multiplexed or separate
data and/or address busses.
Where external devices are
used for compression, the
OCT8304 supports over
4000 channels of multi
timeslot HDLC streams on
the H.110 / H.100 bus to
transport RTP and/or CPS
packets of voice. Any number of
timeslots can be used to form up to 512 multi-
channel streams in this mode while simultane-
ously supporting PCM traffic on the remaining
timeslots.
Support
Octasic provides a developer’s kit including: a
PCI/H.100
On the network side of the device, there are 2
ports. The primary port is configurable for MII
(Ethernet), UTOPIA, or POS-PHY. The secondary
port supports UTOPIA and can be used to
connect to the network, daisy chain devices, or
evaluation
board,

Miscellaneous signals include a JTAG test
interface, a global reset pin, and a master clock
pin as well as several GPIO pins.
Interrupts can also be generated
on this interface. The CPU inter-

schematics, the ORCAD library element, an
operating system independent API, a remote
probe tool and example code to exercise the
device. See OCT8304-EP Product Brief for more
details.
Additionally network stacks for all the device
capabilities are available from Octasic.
