Product Overview
The Ideal Solution for VoIP-Enabled POTS Line Cards in IP-DSLAMs, MSANs, NGDLCs, and xPON ONUs
Mindspeed’s Comcerto 300 family of VoIP processing devices, in concert with the carrier-grade Media Stream Process-
ing software, delivers a complete, integrated VoIP media, signaling and control processing solution for next-generation
network (NGN) POTS/ISDN line cards focused on Class 5 replacement and IP-PBX applications.
Leveraging a dual-core ARM + DSP processing architecture along with a rich set of interfaces and features, Comcerto
300 devices provide complete low-cost/high-value VoIP media and control processing between narrowband TDM and
Ethernet, allowing inexpensive POTS termination systems to be built on an Ethernet / LAN-based architecture.
Comcerto 300 devices are available with an integrated host controller supporting call control, signaling, (SIP/H.248/
MEGACO/H.323….), and other application-specific functions. Devices are available in seven performance levels to sup-
port from 18 to over 150 G.711/20ms channels including echo cancellation, tone detection, and other POTS-focused
features. The Comcerto family supports channel-level feature “mix and match” capabilities: multiple codecs, ECAN
parameters, and features can be run simultaneously. Devices are also available without the integrated host for applica-
tions using external control and signaling.

Dual-gigabit Ethernet with serdes (sGMII)
Dual-core ARM11 architecture
Common memory for VoIP and Host S/W
Local TDM clock generation from packet stream
Common footprint and software API across device family
Dual SPI, TDM and Expansion bus for SLIC/SLAC I/O
Flexible boot options: local flash/EPROM/network boot

Benefits
Gluelessly supports redundant Ethernet backplanes
Simplifies software through real-time/non-RT separation
Minimizes memory cost and allows software feature growth
Improves fax/modem passthrough performance
Cost scales with performance needs, maximizes design reuse
Simplifies board layout for reduced cost
Supports remote or low-cost SDRAM-only configurations
Robust, mature software with worldwide deployments
The Comcerto 300 family’s architectural advantage is gained through the use of two separate ARM11-based sub-
systems which are coupled through a shared memory subsystem. The Media Stream Processing (MSP) subsystem,
derived from Mindspeed’s flagship Comcerto 900 product, couples one ARM to powerful DSP resources and integrated
memory. This MSP subsystem provides real-time, low-latency voice processing. The Control and Signaling Processing
(CSP) subsystem (on M8235x devices), typically built on a Linux or VxWorks kernel, handles customer applications with
less-stringent real-time requirements such as call control and setup, signaling, and supervisory functions.
Dual independent Gigabit Ethernet interfaces support a rich set of configuration options including sGMII, supporting
direct backplane connectivity for high-availability/high reliability MSAN/IP-DSLAM architectures using “dual-star” Eth-
ernet switch fabrics. Internal boot ROM supports the ability to allocate a unique MAC address to each of the Ethernet
ports on multiple line cards in a multi-line card system, without the need for central controller assignment of MAC
addresses. This facilitates rapid startup with each line card having a predetermined, unique pair of MAC addresses.
Dual SPI, I2C, two UARTs, 32 GPIOs, and an expansion bus connect to a wide array of devices.
Mindspeed provides a variety of tools to evaluate the Comcerto 300 device to accelerate designs to production. The
Comcerto Performance Analyzer, available on Mindspeed’s website, provides customers with the ability to determine
which Comcerto 300 device is appropriate for their application. Various codec/feature mixes and channel densities may
be modeled to determine which devices best suit the target application.

M823xx
Comcerto® 300 Series Access Voice Processor Family
The Comcerto 300 Evaluation Module (EVM) allows custom-
ers to investigate device capabilities, or to start their own
software development concurrently with their hardware
development. The Comcerto 300 EVM provides all neces-
sary memory, a TSI, four FXS POTS lines, one FXO trunk
line, two 10/100/1000BaseT ethernet interfaces (with SFP
option for optical connectivity), and a T1/E1 interface. The
EVM also includes a System Expansion connector designed
to mate with Zarlink’s family of SLIC/SLAC EVMs, allowing
customers to quickly and easily configure POTS systems
of 8 to 72 ports.
Mindspeed offers a Comcerto 300 design kit which in-
cludes a Silicon Support Package software bundle (SiSP),
18 months of development support and MSP firmware
upgrades via web download, access to Mindspeed’s is-
sue tracking system, Comcerto 300 schematic design
review, and access to Mindspeed’s worldwide Application
Engineering team. Silicon Support Packages (SiSP) are
available for both VxWorks (6.x) and Linux (2.6), and include
a flexible, customizable UBoot based bootloader and the
driver software required for customers to quickly access
the power of the Comcerto 300 platform for their own
CSP-based applications.
